Projects
Public service activities fall under the premises of the Five-Point Thrust:
Economic Development
- Salvation Army Holiday Delivery: We provide families facing financial hardship with meals, clothing, and gifts to create a celebratory holiday season.
- Soup Kitchens: The chapter assists in serving hot meals to those in need.
- Lunch with Santa: The chapter sponsors a holiday celebration for low-income families and their children.
Educational Development
- The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Preparing Young Women for the 21st Century: Delta Academy is a program for at-risk aged 11-14 that provides academic enrichment and personal development. The program augments academic enrichment in the areas of math, science, and technology. Young women are engaged in lessons about etiquette and self-esteem. We take pride in preparing our young women for leadership positions in the 21st century. Contact: dadgchair@cvilledst.org
- Delta GEMS: Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully: Delta GEMS is an expansion of Delta Academy created for young ladies ages 14-15 to develop the skills they need to succeed in college, careers, and life. Designed around the five program components of Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete, monthly themes have included a welcome to high school session for 9th graders, public speaking, time management, healthy relationships, sex education, and interview skills. These workshops allow for self-reflection, individual growth, accountability, academic excellence, creativity, and leadership. Contact: dadg@cvilledst.org
- Certificates of Recognition & College Scholarships: For nearly three decades, the Charlottesville Alumnae chapter has recognized outstanding achievement, leadership, and citizenship in the local schools. Each year, the sorority presents Certificates of Recognition to local elementary and middle school students during their award days. The chapter also provides college scholarships to high school seniors at the end of each academic year. Contact: scholarchair@cvilledst.org
- National African-American Read-In Chain: For several years, we have co-hosted a Read-In in Charlottesville with the Charlottesville HS Varsity and JV Cheerleading Squads. The first African American Read-In Chain was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers in English in 1990. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. The Read-In has been endorsed by the International Reading Association and over a million readers of all ethnic groups from 49 states, the West Indies, and African countries have participated. - Jabberwock: The Jabberwock & Junior Debutante Program provides young ladies with cultural, educational, service, and social opportunities as it is designed to guide each participant towards a healthy self-image, positive relationships, scholastic achievement, and community leadership. At the end of the year-long program, the Jabberwock celebrates the arts and showcases the talents of the young ladies to the community. Contact: jabberwockchair@cvilledst.org
International Awareness and Involvement
- The International Day of Service: The International Day of Service was created as a part of the sorority’s Summit V: Health and Healing–Let It Continue! Since March 2002, we have educated the community about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
- Adopt-A-Village: The chapter has donated toiletries and money for missionary travel to the village of Tabre, Ghana.
Physical and Mental Health
- Heart Walk: Annually, we partner with the American Heart Association who hosts a 3.5-mile walk annually to increase awareness about cardiovascular disease and to raise funds for research on cardiovascular disease. Charlottesville Alumnae honors the lives of sorors, family, and friends who have been affected by cardiovascular disease. Our sorority’s partnership with the American Heart Association is an unique opportunity for our chapter to expand our efforts to educate the Charlottesville community.
- Total Woman: Mind, Body, and Spirit: We embrace the mission of the sorority’s Health Task Force to educate and facilitate lifestyle changes for the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of sorors and the communities we serve. We have participated in the Total Woman Healthy Weight Program, which challenges chapters to commit to achieving healthier weights. In 2006, the chapter sponsored “Getting Fit with Mocha Lee,” a morning of exercise and healthy choices with Fitness Professional Mocha Lee. Other wellness activities include an Obesity Workshop and our monthly Walk-The-Mall activities. Contact: pmh@cvilledst.org
- Primp & Pamper: In conjuntion with our International Day of Service activities, we host a day of pampering for women affected by HIV/AIDS. Contact: pmhchair@cvilledst.org
- Arthritis Walk: Chapter members participate in the Arthritis Walk each year to raise funds for the research, health services, and advocacy programs of the Arthritis Foundation.
Political Awareness and Involvement
- Voter Education and Registration Drives: Realizing the impact one person’s vote can have, the chapter registers Charlottesville citizens to vote and mobilizes registered voters to participate in elections.
- Forums and Panels: In an effort to keep the local community aware of pertinent political issues that may impact Charlottesville and the surrounding area, the chapter sponsors public forums and panels. Past forums involved discussions of an elected school board and panels featuring senatorial candidates.
- Delta Days at the General Assembly: Chapter members travel to Richmond to observe the active political process and meet with members of the House of Representatives.
In addition to the Five-Point Thrust initiatives, the Charlottesville Alumnae chapter sponsors programs and events centered around community needs or funding chapter service projects.
Social Action: Activities of the National Social Action Commission include programs in Economic Development and Political Awareness & Involvement. In addition to our above programs, the Social Action interests of the chapter include the following:
- Restoration of voting rights for individuals who have paid their debt to society
- Workshops & donations centered around helping victims of Domestic Violence
